Thermography to grow your business and confidence in yourself and with clients

The Thermobuzzer™ Mobile Thermography System has been unarguably one of the best investments I’ve made in my health practice. I knew from the moment I read about the infrared imaging camera that it would make a significant difference in the services I offer. What I hadn’t expected was the increased confidence it’s also given me as I also see the tangible evidence of how effective Lifestyle Prescriptions® Health Coaching is in reducing temperature differentials in the body, so long as my clients are committed to making the micro-changes in their diet, thinking and lifestyle that I recommend.

Clients pick up on our confidence levels, so this is another benefit.

The picture ThermoBuzzer Thermography Cindy Galvin London UKwas taken at one of the many events I speak at about Lifestyle Prescriptions® and the Thermobuzzer™.

Nearly one-third of those who listened to my presentation at this event came to my stand afterwards wanting to learn more.

Many booked Lifestyle Prescription® sessions with me and others either purchased, or are in the process of purchasing, the Thermobuzzer™ to use in their practice. The infrared camera was the big selling point in all instances, because people understood that they will see how the work benefits them.

From a health perspective, the more our clients see how effective the Lifestyle Prescription® process is on their health, the more committed they become. And, really, isn’t helping people live healthier lives what it’s all about?

The Thermobuzzer™ brings to the coaching visible evidence that can’t be denied. I’ve been seeing clients for Bowen Therapy for over 11 years and I’ve lost track of how many times they return reporting improvements, but failing to credit the therapy.  And this is understandable as the changes are often subtle. Absent anything else to prove otherwise, clients will naturally believe that it’s due to their body needing time to heal on its own. And it has … with a little help.

The beauty of Thermobuzzer™ Imaging is that it’s portable and non-invasive. I have grown my business with clients who are now booking for full-body scans every six months to once a year. They are getting their families to come and are spreading word to their friends.

I find it particularly useful to use with women for breast scanning. I’m very careful to spend time emphasizing that this is not a medical diagnosis and clients don’t seem to mind. They can see for themselves how their body reacts to the work we do together.

I also market a service for people working in high stress environments, talking with them about the impact of cortisol on their health and the long-term damaging impact it has. This is talked about a lot in mainstream press, so people understand this. I invite people in for a full body scan and we then decide together which area to work on first. There’s no limit to what you can do to build your practice with this.

This is equipment that will make a significant impact on your business and in the confidence that your clients have that the Lifestyle Prescription® process works. What more could you ask for?

Scottish Doctors authorized to prescribe nature to patients

It’s happening … Lifestyle Prescriptions® are finding its way into doctors offices ( … even if they are as basic as prescribing a walk in “nature”).

Just recently doctors in Shetland (Scotland) have been authorized to prescribe nature to their patients.

It’s the first program in the United Kingdom (or worldwide for that matter) aiming to reduce blood pressure, anxiety, and increase happiness for anyone dealing with stress, heart disease, diabetes, a mental illness, and more.

They even created a brochure with often very funny suggestions how to act on the nature prescription given:

  • In February you can make a windsock from a hoop and material to “appreciate the speed of the wind”;
  • In March you can make beach art from natural materials or “borrow a dog and take it for a walk”;
  • In April you can “touch the sea” and “make a bug hotel”;
  • In May you can “bury your face in the grass”;
  • In July you can “pick two different kinds of grass and really look at them”;
  • In August you can summon a worm out of the ground without digging or using water;
  • In September you can help clean the beach and prepare a meal outdoors;
  • In October you can “appreciate a cloud”; you can “talk to a pony”
  • In November “feed the birds in your garden”
  • In December and do so much more. All on doctor’s orders.*

The benefits of nature on mental and physical health are numerous. Just spending 90 minutes of our day outside in the forest will decrease the activity in the part of your brain typically associated with depression.

Spending time in nature not only reduces anxiety, aggression, ADHD, high blood pressure  but it also increases happiness, pain control, the immune system, and many more benefits we haven’t even studied yet.

Just imagine the benefits of very specific lifestyle based prescriptions focused around the actual root-cause of a symptoms?

Will Power vs. Habits? Who’s the winner?

I’ve lived in California for 20 years and have heard about a thousand times motivational and goal setting advice like this:

“You can do it if you just put your mind to it.”
“Yes you can!”
“Set clear goals in your life and they will manifest.”

If you’ve heard it too and tried to use goal setting and will power to achieve your dreams then I would like to ask you to look back and consider how well this worked for you!

Because what I am realizing now (and research is confirming it) is that setting goals is important and necessary. But it also requires lots of energy, attention and will power to make them happen. You can easily lose your goals by getting side tracked, lack enough will power to follow through or don’t feed it with “energy and attention” … oops!

Ready to change your life one micro habit change at a time? Go here to find out about our boot-camp.

Establishing habits is way more powerful.

Habits are like the automated tasks our smartphone does without us knowing. It’s being done. Just think of all the wonderful apps helping you to stay in touch with family, manage finances, reminders, calendars, etc. It’s all pretty much automated and we love it and benefit from it.

The same is true for our body.

Healthy habits make our body “run” in a productive and high performance kinda way. We don’t have to think at all that we drink water instead of soda, we grab healthy snacks or eat mostly vegetables not because we have set that daily goal or because we used tons of our will power energy to do it.

NO. It’s fully automated running in our background (our subconscious mind).

Our breathing, blood flow, digestion, sensory input, brain activity, etc…. the majority of our bodily functions are unconscious “habits” (if that is what we decide to call them).

Symptoms are habits!

Ok. I said it. This might be a totally new perspective for you. But start consider symptoms as habits and not as something being wrong with you.

Because your symptoms are biological reactions based on what you eat, how you react to stress, how you process emotions, how your unconscious automated thoughts, e.g. beliefs, affect you and how you perceive your environment, your relationships and your connections with others and the universe, presence or God.

Your symptoms are the results of your unconscious habits and when you change that “symptom producing habit” you’ll notice that your body will automatically – sometime instantaneously, sometimes over time – adjust and the symptoms disappear.

In Lifestyle Medicine and especially in our upcoming Lifestyle Prescriptions® Boot-Camp we are using the power of habits in a conscious way to transform our body-mind into a well oiled “bio-machine” that produces empowering emotions, thoughts and results.

Seth Godin says it perfectly: “Your audacious life goals are fabulous. We’re proud of you for having them. But it’s possible that those goals are designed to distract you from the thing that’s really frightening you — the shift in daily habits that would mean a re-invention of how you see yourself.”

“Habits are powerful, but delicate. They can emerge outside our consciousness or can be deliberately designed. They often occur without our permission but can be reshaped by fiddling with their parts. They shape our lives far more than we realize—they are so strong, in fact, that they cause our brains to cling to them at the exclusion of all else, including common sense.” states Charles Duhigg.

William James said: “All our life, so far as it has definite form, is but a mass of habits – practical, emotional, and intellectual – systematically organized for our weal or woe, and bearing us irresistibly toward our destiny, whatever the latter may be.”

The big question for you right now is: Do you want to continue to struggle using will power to improve your health and your life?

Or are you ready to use the power of micro-habit change and Lifestyle Prescriptions to consciously automate your unconscious habits and let your body’s intelligence do the work? Once you set up healthy habits, they become part of your identity, they can last all your life and require very little or no will power to maintain them.

It’s your choice.

So who’s the winner: Goals or Habits?

I guess there is really no winner, both have their purpose.

But one thing is for sure true: Creating habits in a conscious manner is extremely powerful and will free up your will power and energy and help you automate tasks in your life that you used to struggle with.

Learn how to use root-cause based habits for self-healing.

Ch-ch Changes! 10 Inspirational Hit Songs for Well-Being & Transformation

A Change Would Do You Good.

Stating the obvious change is at the heart of Lifestyle Prescriptions® Health Coaching and the transformations that happen with it.

I’ve written this blog for you to ponder your own attitude to change and encourage you to make some if you wish.

Just for fun I’ve suggested some songs about change too, as music can be an uplifting motivator connecting us to ourselves and others.

When we listen to music dopamine is released. This has good side-effects enhancing our emotions, movement, perceptions and health.  Music can have a huge impact on what we feel and think including our world view making change and music intrinsically linked.

Change is a very individual thing. Some people undergo massive life changes such as changing gender, religion, multiple complex surgeries and so on, in order to create a happier or preferred lifestyle and version of themselves. I used to work with autistic teenagers and as a community of people change was generally hard for them to adapt to.  Processing time, visual aids and social stories were embedded into the curriculum. Even something intended to be enjoyable like school Christmas lunch could cause anxiety and meltdown because it’s a change to routine. Then there is the other extreme; people who seem to have no difficulty making changes easily moving through life in a state of grace and flow happy and moving forward achieving things seemingly effortlessly.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I generally find change easy or does it present me with challenge?
  • Is it easier for me to make changes in some life areas and not others?

Before committing to a change self-efficacy, resources, willingness and capabilities need to be considered and planned around. These considerations are taught as part of the Lifestyle Prescriptions® Boot-camp. After completing a boot-camp last autumn I highly recommend it for mindset support and camaraderie whilst making lifestyle changes. Completing the boot-camp helped get me disciplined and back on track after a few months of serious illness and feeling stuck.

The Lifestyle Prescriptions® CHANGE Hit list:

Read through my comments linked with each song listed below and as you do consider if anything resonates personally. The song lyrics or themes may not necessarily connect with my health-coach musings and are merely included to add further depth and exploration of change if you wish. I’m a music lover so hope you find listening to the tracks as much fun as I did.

10.  Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’

Dylan is known for writing protest songs.  People often protest, “It’s not like the gold old days.” Common anecdotes may then be about manners and youth culture, trusting your neighbours, getting more for your money in the past and so on. This kind of thinking is limiting because it can stop us enjoying the present and of course we are living in the present. Appreciation and gratitude unlock so much for us.

  • What things are better now than they were a generation or two ago?
  • How has your life been enriched or become easier because of these changes?

9.  Take That – Everything Changes

“We’re a thousand miles apart, but still I love you” is a feel-good lyric from this song. Let’s think about this from two angles. Firstly, they say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and, also often that long distant relationships frequently fail.  Of course, there’s more individual factors at play than distance in miles or kilometres alone determining the relationship outcome.

Secondly, if we consider the lyric more abstractly it could be that different thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and even cultures could make people feel a thousand miles apart. From the therapeutic work I have undertaken with clients I often feel they gain greater understanding and realise that they would behave in the absolute same way as others if they had been in their shoes. The Law of One states we are all connected, and this is backed up in science by quantum entanglement. It can be an eye opener for clients and feels magical once they truly get it!

Relationships being such a central essential component of our lives are often implicated in health issues.  If you feel that your relationships are having a negative impact on your wellbeing do book a consultation with a Lifestyle Prescriptions® Health Coach.

8.  Eric Clapton – Change the World

Naturally, there are changes we would all like to see at a global level environmentally, culturally, politically. The easiest way to change is to change us, ourselves personally. This then changes others.  The outside world reflects our inner world like a mirror with life being a filter of our inner most thoughts. Therefore, things are good or bad, right or wrong because we label them that way.

  • After emotionally processing a challenging situation ask yourself did any good at all come from it? Loss for example, frequently leads to new opportunities, difficulties tend to lead to new skills and awareness, and heartache to strength, compassion and wisdom.

7.  Transvision Vamp – Time For Change

Are you a serial procrastinator? Do you waste days on end, or put off important things indefinitely? Sometimes active planning (with a Lifestyle Prescriptions® Health Coach) and better time management is enough to remedy this. Other times procrastination can be an indicator of stress, anxiety or depression. Procrastination can also indicate perfectionism which can be unrealistic when taken to extremes. Procrastinators faced with deadlines have increased medical visits. Therefore, if you run these behavioural patterns it’s best to work with a coach asap. It would also be worth watching your feelings, thoughts and emotions and notice what you experience. Shame, guilt, powerlessness, lack of control, low self-esteem, sadness and other treatable reactions may be hidden underneath the procrastination. Change is possible. Ask about Lifestyle Prescriptions® Health Coaching.

6.  Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne – Changes

This song outlines the change in family dynamics as children grow and become independent of their parents. We are often more like our parents than we would maybe choose to admit. Aside from genetic hereditary the exciting emerging field of epigenetics reveals bio-psycho-genealogy. Environmental stressors cause bio-logical responses which create physical changes. It’s an exciting time because we are learning how to un-do these patterns with tools like Matrix Reimprinting and EAM®. The information transfers down the family tree, so, not only can previous generational trauma be stored in your energy but also any trauma and patterns you have can be passed down the family line too to future generations. Think carefully before that next alcoholic binge or cigarette! TIME magazine has some very interesting more detailed articles on this.

5.  Eminem – Going Through Changes

Eminem is known for lyrics that cover darker subjects.  Addiction and suicide are two themes in this track.  With these two circumstances without doubt there will be an accompanying painful story. It’s becoming extremely well-documented that there is a high rate of male suicide especially. Nobody should suffer alone. Doctors and specialist long-term support is available and best. Following great adversity, pain and addiction life can be amazing again.  Suicidal thoughts are not necessarily around wanting to die, but more about wanting to stop the present pains. Addictions are an attempt to fill a gap at soul level. It is said that out of our deepest pain can come our greatest gifts. There are other ways to be.

4.  Kylie Minogue – Wouldn’t Change A Thing

In this song Kylie sings happily, “If I had to do it all again, I wouldn’t change a single thing.” Regrets can be stressful. Long term unresolved stress is likely to lead to illness and reduce the chances of longevity. Check out the wonderful book, ‘The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying’ by Bronnie Ware. Here they are summarised:

I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me
I wish I hadn’t worked so hard
I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings
I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends
I wish that I’d let myself be happier

  • What can you do to ensure you leave this earth with no regrets?

3.  Sheryl Crow – A Change Will Do You Good

If you’re in a state of inertia this song title in a great mantra. At Harvard University they discovered that when you make a dietary change you are convinced about you are more likely to be successful result wise.  Belief is more important than the kind of change you make! Rather than ponder which diet to follow choose one and try it without over analysing and see what happens. Make modifications as you go. The most important part is take-action and starting. In Lifestyle Prescriptions© consistent 1% weekly micro-habit change is recommended for long-term results.

2.  David Bowie – Changes

David Bowie constantly changed and re-invented his music and physical appearance. It seemed he never got stale. In Lifestyle Prescriptions® we know that when it feels that life is going in the wrong direction or we feel like we are backing the wrong thing in life the adrenals let us know.  People living these type of life experiences are more likely to experience fatigue and burnout. Once the conflict/s are resolved the energy and vitality begin to normalise again. A great place to start with Lifestyle Prescriptions® Health Coaching is health analysis with values exploration. When we live fully in line with our values our energy settles and we feel happier. If creativity of expression is one of your values and you work long hours in a routine job your adrenal glands may give you a clue. You need to nurture not suppress your creativity. Likewise, if one of your core values is honesty and your partner cheats on you then you are more likely to take the unwanted news extremely badly.

1.  The Scorpions – Winds of Change

This beautiful song is about hope for change. Hope can be motivational; with hope we have a chance, without hope we don’t. Many vouch for the link between hope, health, and happiness.  Expectation and belief have an impact on the nervous system and just like with the placebo effect a hopeful outlook can make health improvement more likely. Did you ever meet a chronic unhopeful person who is happy?

A great tool to assist us with changes around maintaining desires and expectations is affirmations. ‘I can and will change’ demonstrates assertion, commitment and certainty. It’s uplifting, empowering and inspires self-motivation. It’s certainly better self-talk than, “I’ll never be able to do a, b, or c” which instantly indicates we have given up!

In life change is inevitable. We are young. We age. We die. Change offers chance for growth and expansion; an opportunity to learn, gain wisdom, fresh insights and perceptions. Often though, it is human nature to be creatures of habit and resist change, even though we say we want it.

However, if we sabotage ourselves by not taking any action to change our thoughts, habits and behaviours and we procrastinate we may later feel guilty, frustrated or angry with ourselves. We may later say to ourselves… “If only I did x, y, z…. then my life would be better now.” Do you want to be that person?

  • What positive change/s are you inspired to make after reading this blog?
  • Write your Lifestyle Prescription© down, put it in a visible place you see regularly and take-action now. Good luck!

Lena Olsten from Sweden is a Thermobuzzer owner and one of our Lifestyle Prescriptions® students, she recently stepped out of her comfort zone and took a booth at a Health Fair in Stockholm.

Lena shared her experiences with us:

“I just had the ThermoBuzzer for 2.5 months but I stepped out of my comfort zone and with the help from Johannes, Emma and Cody, I took the step to attend the fair, called Harmoni Expo.

I offered a free ThermoBuzzer facial scan and a consultation in total 15 minutes. I was fully booked both days and had to say no to many who were interested.

The interest for ThermoBuzzer was enormous. In total during the fairs 2 days, me and my colleague met hundreds of people and I took ThermoBuzzer images of 65 people or more, whom I now can send offers and newsletter to.

The fair gave me confidence and such big learnings that I can take with me into being Health Coach. I urge you all to go out and showcase Your knowledge. You are AMAZING.”

Lena is so passionate about her work and deserves to succeed, but what made the difference was that she was willing to step out of her comfort zone and be visible, something we can all learn from.

10 Self-Care Strategies For Any Chronic Health Condition

Thoughts about health … What is self-care and how can it benefit those with chronic and long-term health conditions?

Currently 15 million people in the UK live with a chronic or long-term health condition. A long-term health condition means there is no cure at this time and includes conditions such as COPD, diabetes and arthritis. Alarmingly, a 2012 study in The Lancet showed increase in the number of people living with more than one long-term condition. As we know the NHS is massively over-stretched and the cost emotionally, physically and financially to individuals, and workplaces is massive where long-term health conditions are involved. By contrast roughly 20% of GP workload is taken up with minor ailments such as indigestion, conjunctivitis and earache where short term self-care or a visit to a pharmacist for advice would suffice. Additionally, there are approximately 6.5 million unpaid carers in the UK supporting loved ones that are disabled, seriously ill or elderly.

The infographic below, ‘Leading Causes of Death in Perspective’ really hammers home the relevance of the need for change regarding long-term conditions both those that are largely physical and also those which are more related to mental health. It is sad and perhaps interesting to note that death by natural causes doesn’t even appear within the list.

When health seems to be failing and conventional / allopathic treatments do not fully remove symptoms it often seems there comes a point where the medics can offer no more, or if they can it’s to suppress symptoms rather than cure and side-effects can then also become problematic. It is by this point essential for self-care to be the order of the day…every day. Self-care can be empowering and can take us from victim mode and elevate us potentially to experiences and situations that can be highly positive. We may not have wanted the condition or symptoms but the new different way of life certainly doesn’t have to be bad or inferior compared to life before the disease process began.

So, you have a long-term condition and one or countless visit/s to the GP and a prescription didn’t resolve the health issue. You may even have been told you have to live with it. However, the good news is you still have choices… many of them… when you own the condition and become a partner with your health-care professionals and ultimately self-care.

The purpose of this blog is to share ideas. It is my hope that if you are currently managing tricky symptoms that there is a little gem or nugget of information, some pearl of wisdom here that serves you in some way, an action you can take to bring about positive change. The ideas are not new or radical but tried and tested, put simply they work so can work for you too!

10 Self-Care Ideas For Any Condition

1. Get the ESSENTIAL non-negotiable basics right as much as possible: sleep, relaxation, diet, exercise, fresh air, breathing
Benefits: ability to cope, feeling of wellbeing, improved quality of life

2. Acceptance mind-set. If you are stressed about your health that is another obstacle blocking you. What are your health beliefs? Do they serve you or create fear?
Benefits: control over condition

3. Research … who has your condition and is doing well? What wisdom can you take away from their story?
Benefits: inspiration and hope

4. Raising your vibration with gratitude is always a winner. Notice how it’s impossible to hold a positive and negative thought in your mind simultaneously.
Benefits: reduces cortisol, improves immunity, makes us feel great and increases longevity

5. Take action to release stress, drama and other triggers from your life. This can be through real life solutions such as removing yourself from emotionally toxic environments and people or with support from a specialist therapist or Lifestyle Prescriptions® Health Coach who knows your condition well.
Benefits: Improved communication and self-image and reduction in negative feelings and emotions

6. Look at the wider picture. Relief can occur on multiple levels: mind-body-spirit-social-environmental. Where are there gaping gaps? Set small, realistic targets and wellbeing orientated goals. If one new step is actively implemented each week imagine what you could achieve over a year. That’s 52 Lifestyle Prescriptions® giving yourself permission to live life the way you choose!
Benefits: Less reliance on healthcare professionals, greater vitality and zest for life

7. Embrace social support and also know when to reach out and do so. Isolation is one of the worst things for us, as humans we were designed to be social. Those around us are not mind readers and often want to help but are unsure how to do so.
Benefits: Better relationships and ease with challenging situations

8. Say “NO!” as necessary to pace yourself. If other people are looking after themselves and you’re looking after them too, then who is looking after you?
Benefits: Being in own power and prioritising own wellbeing needs

9. More love. More laughter! Cliché I know but love really is the greatest healer and laughter the best medicine.
Benefits: faster healing, less depression and low mood, natural pain control, fewer colds, lower blood pressure, better stress management, connects you to others, keeps you grounded, burns calories, free of charge

10. Have something to look forward to for you. Create a bucket list and have fun with it. You can always plan another list once everything on the first one has been achieved.
Benefits: Connects you to your values, motivates and inspires, makes life meaningful and worthwhile, allows sense of accomplishment, get more out of life, realise your dreams

Do hotter bodies fight wounds, infections, tumors better? [New Research]

This new research about body temperature and our immune system really got me excited because it proves one of the key principles in Lifestyle Prescriptions® and the Art and Science of Self-Healing.

The Universities of Warwick and Manchester have found in new research by a team of biologists & mathematicians that the hotter our body temperature, the more our bodies increase a vital defence mechanism that fights wounds, infections and tumors.

This finding is especially interesting because the researchers demonstrated that a small rises in body temperature (like during a fever) speeds up the cellular clock (NF-κB) that controls the response to infections.

At a body temperature of 34 degrees, the NF-κB clock slows down.  At higher temperatures (beyond 37 degree – like fever at 40 degrees), the NF-κB cellular clock speeds up.

This study shows that temperature changes inflammation in cells and tissues in a biologically organised way and suggests that new drugs might more precisely change the inflammatory response by targeting the A20 protein.*

A Holistic-Integrative Lifestyle Prescriptions® Perspective

Our body temperature is an invaluable indicator of health and we know this through over 500 thermography studies over the last 40 years and our work with professional ThermoBuzzer Imaging which shows our unique heat patterns and surface temperature imbalances and asymmetries using cutting-edge mobile infrared thermography technology.

ThermoBuzzer Peak Performance Thermography with Lifestyle Prescriptions

The question is do we really need a pharmaceutical drug to “manipulate” our cell clock and stimulate the self-healing mechanism in our body?

Or are there other ways in which we can influence our body temperature and the immune and auto-regulation response that helps us keep wounds, inflammation and even tumors in check?

First of all it really helps to look at our body and biology from a Body-Mind-Social Connection perspective – and the Art and Science of Self-Healing can help us to understand that connection.

  • Our body is directly linked to specific stress triggers, unresolved emotional hurts, unconscious thoughts/beliefs, social life situations and our lifestyle habits.
  • And the second important principle is that every organ tissue in our body goes through very specific points and phases of self-healing.

Lifestyle Prescriptions University | Root-Cause Analysis and Self-Healing Protocols

Our global network of Lifestyle Prescriptions® Doctors, Nurses, Psychologists and Health Coaches can monitor these phases of self-healing by paying attention to the Autonomic Nervous System and its sympathetic and parasympathetic symptoms.

We’ve noticed that when our clients are in the stress phase (sympathetic, flight-flight) that the body temperature actually is lower. They feel stressed, think about the stressful situation all the time, emotions like anger, sadness, frustrations are running high and our body’s stress hormones provide us with the energy we need to go through this stressful phase and resolve it.

But what’s interesting is that after the stress phase we’ve noticed a regeneration phase which is reflected by an increased parasympathetic activity, e.g. repair and regeneration functions are activated.

And that’s where the previously mentioned research comes in. Because even though each organ tissue has different ways to repair, we always notice increased body temperature, fever, inflammations during that regeneration period.

Is it possible that our body is actually highly intelligent and is not doing anything “wrong”? That increased body temperature is actually the result of a natural self-healing and auto-regulation mechanism … kinda what our immune system is supposed to do?

What if we could monitor these temperature differences in our body and use effective Lifestyle Prescriptions®  Protocols to help our clients remove the stress trigger and let go of the unresolved emotions that seems to fuel this process?

What if we could use proven Lifestyle modifications including nutrition, exercise and stress management to improve the self-healing mechanism in our body?

The big challenge for all health professionals is to evolve to a new health care paradigm that is not just based on treating symptoms and managing disease but actually applies the Art and Science of Self-Healing.

And that’s what our mission and purpose at Lifestyle Prescriptions University is. Become a leader in the new emerging health paradigm.

Lifestyle Medicine and Lifestyle Prescriptions® – The Answer to Chronic Disease?

Currently, unhealthy lifestyle practices account up to 63% of all deaths and a major reason for the inflation of chronic diseases. Moreover, with the traditional approach of conventional medicine, the figures are only getting worse.

Need for a Paradigm Shift in Health Care

Unsurprisingly, the United States spends highest on its health care than any other country. On the contrary, its citizens get very little value in return. An expert panel commissioned by the National Institutes of Health, released a new report wherein the U.S. ranked lowest on variety of health measures.

The primary protocol for treating lifestyle diseases such as obesity, Type-2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and other such chronic illnesses is by prescribing medicines and other pharmaceutical products leading many to personal bankruptcies.

As the existing health care system revolves around benefiting the medical industry, citizens suffer from a disease management approach that merely “mops the floor” by stalling the symptoms through medicines, rather than “turning off the faucet” and finding the root cause of the illness.

Yes, traditional medicine is important but, fact of the matter is chronic diseases are a consequence of improper diet and lifestyle choices. Our primary concern as healthcare professionals should be to help patients with long-term holistic lifestyle choices and provide alternatives to cope with their everyday stress and emotional conflicts. This is possible only when we upgrade our existing healthcare model.

Lifestyle Medicine: The Answer to Chronic Health Problems

However, recent advancements in the field of epigenetics indicate the efficacy of evidence-based lifestyle medicine in altering human metabolism and reversing the ill effects of poor lifestyle practices. This new line of treatment has opened many doors for physicians looking for a more systematic approach in dealing with lifestyle-related health issues of their patients.

In addition, while the health care system is shifting its priority from fee-for-service system to pay-for-performance system, this has made the process of integrating lifestyle medicine into our existing health care system a lot more feasible.

Furthermore, it is encouraging to see many physicians eager to integrate lifestyle medicine into their medical practice.

What is Lifestyle Medicine?

Lifestyle medicine is a newly emerging healthcare system involving implementation of lifestyle and alternative therapies in a systematic manner for the treatment of chronic diseases. It not only works as “disease prevention,” but also as “risk prevention”- reducing the risk factors leading up to a disease.

However, applying lifestyle medicine techniques requires physicians to possess several skills and competency for the treatment of special health risk behaviors and bringing about healthy lifestyle practices among patients.

Areas for modification include nutrition, physical activity, lifestyle changes, body weight control, patient compliance, stress and coping, spiritual, mind-body techniques, to name a few.

Challenges of Integrating Lifestyle Medicine

Patient adherence is paramount for the success of any medical treatment. Currently, many health care providers lack in applying basic knowledge about lifestyle and functional medicine. Even if they succeed in advising patients on “what to do,” chances of patients’ non-compliance are still high.

Another challenge for physicians is to find the root cause of symptoms and provide precise behavioral modifications to tackle patient’s health issues.

Therefore, a change in health care system also calls for change in the role-play of physicians: where they should not only tell “what” the patients should do, but also participate as a health coach and educate them about the benefits of healthy lifestyle modifications and provide alternatives and motivation for their easy transition.
